When Mel Casas completed the Humanscape series in 1989 — 153 paintings over twenty-four years — he did not stop painting. He changed scale. Beginning that year and continuing through 2006, Casas produced a substantial body of work in the 24x24 in. format: intimate square canvases that represent a deliberate departure from the monumental scale that had defined the Humanscapes. Without the dominant screen image that structured the earlier series, these paintings gave Casas greater compositional freedom, and they show a painter exploring color, form, and subject matter with renewed range. Over the course of his post-Humanscape career, Casas produced more than 600 paintings, and the 24-by-24-inch works form one of the largest and most sustained groups within that body of work. They span seventeen years and reflect the full arc of his thinking after the completion of his defining series.
